The National Institute on Ageing and Health (NIAH) is a not-for-profit organization committed to improving the health of millions of older adults in Nepal. Recognizing the critical need for comprehensive care and the lack of support for the health and well-being of older adults in Nepal, NIAH is established to fill this gap by leading the way in ageing research and healthcare services.

NIAH operates with a strong research framework emphasizing the translation of research into practical interventions, clinical care, policies, and programs that benefit older adults and their families. NIAH develops and supports evidence-based strategies and tools to promote healthy ageing, reduce the risk of dementia, and improve disease diagnosis and clinical care. In addition, by providing comprehensive senior healthcare and support that is accessible, affordable, and available to hard-to-reach populations, it seeks to improve older adults' quality of life in Nepal.

Our Team

NIAH is led by a group of highly qualified medical doctors and scientists actively engaged in ageing research and the well-being of older adults in Nepal. Our team’s expertise includes:

  • Geriatric medicine including the operation of memory clinics
  • Ageing and dementia research with a focus on longitudinal cohort studies
  • Artificial intelligence and machine learning application in healthcare
  • Development and deployment of health technology and digital tools
  • Design and execution of clinical trials
  • Community outreach and social welfare initiatives

NIAH has outlined a multi-faceted strategy aimed at addressing the challenges and opportunities presented by Nepal’s ageing population.

  • Becoming a Center of Excellence: NIAH aims to be recognized as a center of excellence in ageing research, Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, and other age-related health conditions, as well as in overall geriatric healthcare. This will be achieved through the advancement of scientific research, technologies, and innovations for clinical care pathways, as well as the capacity enhancement of care providers.
  • Advancing Mobile Elderly Healthcare: NIAH is dedicated to advancing mobile healthcare services for older adults, strengthening referral systems, and enhancing the service delivery network to ensure comprehensive care is available to all.
  • Expansion through Satellite Centers: NIAH plans to establish centers in strategic locations across provinces to expand access to support systems for healthy ageing and healthcare services for older adults, ensuring coverage even in remote areas.
